During the cold war, when the U.S. and Soviet Union created a bipolar geopolitical world and engaged in proxy conflicts all over the world, it made a certain amount of sense to worry about stability on the Middle East. Now that we don’t have a dual-power conflict, it’s much less important. We don’t need to have bases there to get oil; they have to sell more urgently than we have to buy. As of now the major destabilizing element in the Middle East is the U.S. military presence. The best way to stabilize the region is to leave and let the people who live there figure out how to achieve stability on their own. I wish some American politician would begin to acknowledge this.

In reality, the U.S. goal in the Middle East is not to help people achieve stability but to provoke and promote destabilization in order to secure control over the energy resources in the region. American politicians are not confused, they are well aware of that.
