Iran police arrest 457 in post-vote demonstrations

Despite warnings against illegal gathering, Iran’s police arrested 457 in the post-election violence that erupted in Iranian capital city of Tehran on Saturday.  “Iran’s police arrested 457 people who have caused insecurity, disrupted public order and clashed with police around Tehran’s Enqelab square on Saturday,” Iran’s police said in a statement.

The statement came after at least 13 people were killed and 20 wounded in post-vote unrest in the Iranian capital on Saturday.

According to authorities, the casualties occurred after some ‘terrorist elements’ infiltrated the rallies staged in protest at the result of the June 12 presidential election, which saw Mahmoud Ahmadinejad win a second term in office with a significant majority of 63 percent of the votes.

The statement read that the arrested vandals destroyed public properties, broke windows of banks and shops and caused trouble for the people.

In separate incidents, armed terrorists set fire to a mosque and attacks were also made on two gas stations and a military post.

Presidential contenders Mir-Hossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi have rejected the result as fraudulent, demanding an annulment of the election.

Police officials say they have successfully managed to restore security in the main streets of Tehran, adding that calm has returned to the Iranian capital.
